On July 1, the people of Canada celebrated her Canadian day. A day set aside to celebrate the confederation of Canada’s self-governing Dominion of the British Colonies.
According to a statement released in Ottawa by Minister of Canadian Heritage, July 1 is an opportunity for Canadian people to acknowledge their past and learn from it to be better in their future. The statement challenged all Canadians and indeed her governments to stay committed to the ongoing work of advancing on the path of reconciliation, in other to live up the dream of a fully inclusive country for the future generations.
Speaking further: ‘‘Canada isn’t one thing to everyone, but it’s a collection of things that make us all proud. We know, among other things, we are compassionate, hopeful, welcoming, free, fair, creative and still growing.’’
Our Diversity is in our strength: the minister urged the Canadian people to embrace and love their diversity. According to the minister, the Canadian diversity is in their strength, from diversity of ideas to diversity of experiences to diversity of backgrounds.
Recall that in 1867, a British North America Act created the Dominion of Canada of three British Colonies thereby making her a self-governing Dominion of Great Britain and a federation of four provinces.
The day is usually celebrated with parades, displays of the flag, the singing of the national anthem, music, dance, and fireworks.
Happy celebration to all our esteemed Canadians!
